Welcome to Second Grade
Welcome to Second Grade! I am excited to be starting
a new year and look forward to the opportunity to teach your child. Many of you
may be approaching the start of school with both excitement and apprehension.
Hopefully this information will give you an idea of what to expect and answer
many questions for you.
Second Grade is a vital time in your child’s life,
both academically and socially. My goal this year is to provide a safe and
loving environment where your child can grasp the fundamental skills of
reading, writing, math and science in Mandarin. In addition, I want your child
to able to use these skills by making connections to real life.
Thank you for the opportunity to teach your child
this year. I appreciate you giving me the chance to be a part of the
educational journey your child is taking at the GLOBE Academy as they become
life-long learners. I will do everything that I can to ensure your child and
family have a successful and happy second grade experience.
Attendance
Your
child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success.
Many of the learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with
classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to make up work at home. Please
view school as a priority, and please ensure that your child attends every day
except in cases of illness or emergency.
F.I.S.H
The
Family Involvement Starts Here folder is a folder that your child uses every
day to help develop organizational skills and learn responsibility. This folder
is a good way to maintain effective communication skills between home and
school. It aims to eliminate lost notes, and protects homework, money, and
assignments. It also helps to keep your family informed of important school
events and academic progress. Please make sure you check the folder on a
nightly basis and include any information teachers need to know for the
following day.
Behavior
The
GLOBE Academy practices positive discipline and the principles of our school
motto CREST. Behavior charts and rewards are unacceptable. Teachers will give
fair and rational consequences for students unable to show appropriate
behavior. We encourage you to apply the CREST principles and positive
discipline in your own homes.
Daily Necessities
Students
should bring a water bottle and a backpack daily. He/she should not bring any
toys, electronics, trading cards, or anything that is not related to school or
our course of study. Prohibited items will be confiscated y the teacher and
returned at the end of the day.
Progress reports
The
GLOBE Academy does not use a numerical grading system. We will be using the
following scale for grading:
ES -
Exceeding the standard. The student consistently performs one or two grade
levels above what is expected.
MS -
Meting the standard. The student is consistently meeting the grade level
expectations.
AS –
Approaching the standard. The student meets the standard most of the time but
makes some mistakes or has some minor misunderstanding.
JB –
Just beginning. The student is making some sense of the material but is still
confused or has major misconceptions that still need to be worked on.
NY –
Not yet. The student does not understand the material. The student needs more
support, help or time to understand the material.
Volunteer opportunities
The
safety of students is our priority. we will need volunteers to serve as
chaperones for school field trips and help with class celebrations. When we
need volunteers, we will send out information to let you know how you can sign
up.
Communication
A good
parent-teacher relationship is the key for your child’s success. Throughout the
year you are welcome to contact me through email (all communication will be
returned within 24 hours) or notes in the F.I.S.H folder. Please understand
that conferences or communication about your child is not possible during
instructional time.

Going home with a friend:
Please remember that
you need to write a note in the agenda if your child will be going home with
another adult. The students will NOT be allowed to call home the day that they
are supposed to ride with someone. WE MUST have a written note as well as the
carpool number of the student(s) being picked up.
Attendance:
The instructional day begins at 8:15 with
announcements beginning at 8:05. Please help your child to arrive on time so
that we can begin class promptly each day. It is very important for your child
to be at school every day. I do understand, however, that emergencies occur.
Please notify the school if your child is absent.
Water
Bottles:
It is very important to be hydrated
throughout the day. Please, make sure that your child brings his/her water bottles
daily. Include your child´s name on the
water bottle.
If your child has to take medicine at
school, please send me a medical information form. Please visit the front office
for this form. This must state the name of the medicine, dosage and time the
medicine must be taken. Without this note, the school is not authorized to give
the medication.
In order to keep all of our students safe,
it is our school policy to not bring edible treats for birthdays. For snacks, please send mess free food. We are a nut free school. Please send a healthy snack in every day. If you would like for your child to have snack, please provide them with a healthy option to bring to school.
Conferences:
Conferences may only be held via an appointment. Not during the first month of school.
Parents may request a conference with me as follows:
sending a brief note with the student
sending an email directly to me at zpeng@theglobeacademy.net
